Wedgwood Spirit Week: this week!
From the principal's newsletter: Wedgwood's Student Council has planned Spirit Week for May 20-24 and the Student Council Representatives brainstormed aspects that students love about Wedgwood to help guide Spirit Week. Here's what's happening the rest of the week.
Tuesday, May 21: "We Create" Small art projects will be given to all classes to complete during the school day.
Wednesday, May 22: "Team Day" Wear the sports jersey of a favorite team or team up with friends to wear similar or matching clothing.
Thursday, May 23: "Invitation Day" Student Council students will be organizing games and activities during each of the recesses. They will be inviting students to play and will help teach the games.
Friday, May 24: "Fun Time: Midnight Mania!" Classes will be provided with glow-sticks and age-appropriate scary stories. Classes may decide to make this PJ day as well.
Are you Team Carnival?
The rides are booked, the food trucks locked down, sno-cone ice is being shaved as we speak. We just need our Wedgwood community to step up and help us run one of our most FUN events of the year, coming up on Saturday, June 1.
Please take a look at the volunteer opportunities – there are many options: from working the prize table to manning the obstacle course to keeping an eye on the quiet craft area. There are a lot of roles because most are broken up into two time slots. We want you to be able to volunteer and enjoy the carnival with your family.

Our Wedgwood STEM Night was a huge success and we’d like to thank Helen Chu for the massive amount of work she put in to make it happen for our kids. She rallied our local scientific community, had firefighters dropping kids’ egg experiments from their ladder and pulled together volunteers so that the rest of us could enjoy this fun evening. Thank you to Helen, our local scientists and volunteers!

Kindergarten Barnyard Moosical, Friday, June 7
A note from Ms. Waltzer: Our kindergarten Barnyard Moosical will be Friday, June 7 at 6 p.m. on the Wedgwood Stage (in the cafeteria). Please drop your student off in their classrooms at 5:40 before finding your seat 🙂 We have made head pieces for our costumes, but other than that students can wear what they want (some want to wear the color that matches their animals). Thank you! Prepare for the adorableness!
Special garden event, Tuesday May 21
Kids are welcome to join in at Wedgwood Elementary School’s Educational Garden for a special activity hosted by the Wedgwood Garden Club: “Gardening with Kids.” Garden Educator Nicole Parish-Andrews (Foxberry Education) will take us on a tour through the school’s garden, share tips and ideas about how to engage kids of all ages in learning about gardening and will lead us through a planting activity. Everyone can take home a planted seed for their garden!
We’ll meet near the greenhouse on the school’s playground at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, May 21. (Kids under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. No building access during this time.)
Marmots to take over T-Mobile Park!
Our baseball-loving Wedgwood community ordered approximately 245 tickets for the Wedgwood Night at the Mariners Game! We’ll see you all Friday, May 31 as the Mariners take on the Los Angeles Angels at 7:10 p.m. followed by Star Wars Fireworks Night. Tickets will be sent home via kidmail once we have them. If you have Wedgwood spirit gear, that’s the night to wear it!
Bike to School Month
Thanks for the great turnout for Bike Everywhere Day last Friday. Keep your kids tracking their biking this month; at the end of the month, we'll tally up the totals and see which class has biked the most minutes. Any biking anywhere counts – it doesn’t have to be to and from school. Download a tracking calendar from the Cascade Bicycle Club website.
The Wedgwood Pantry is available; nurse's office needs kids' clothing
We still have plenty of food downstairs by the elevators at the Wedgwood Pantry. If your family could use extra food this spring or summer, please come take as many bags of food as you would like. The pantry will be cleared out for the summer by June 15, so please come before then if you would like food. If you are unable to come to school for the food, please contact Nurse Sarah and she will help make other arrangements.
The nurse’s office is in need of clothing – specifically youth medium and large T-shirts and youth large leggings and sweatpants. Thank you for any donations!
Traveling museum comes to Wedgwood
Our Art Docent program has been working closely with the Seattle Art Museum and The Burke Museum to bring items from their collections directly to our own Wedgwood students. Last month, our kids explored the visual culture of African art which included a mask, stool, jewelry and textiles. This month, keep an eye out for art and artifacts from our own Pacific Northwest Coastal Natives and next month we’ll have objects from Australia and Oceania on loan from SAM. Everything will be displayed in the cases outside the office and learning opportunities will be arranged by teachers and classroom art docents.
Why your kid might be scratching their head
A special note from Nurse Sarah: Lice is beginning again at Wedgwood. Please check you child’s head at home by separating the hair and looking for tiny silvery egg sacs (nits) on the hair shaft, near the scalp. Live lice are small brownish-gray insects without wings. If you find any nits or live bugs, there are a number of treatment options: lice-killing shampoo found at most drug stores, prescription shampoos, and lice treatment salons.
The most important thing is to treat right away and physically remove the nits by combing with a special lice comb. You should comb the hair at least once a day for 2 weeks to ensure all nits have been removed.
Lice does NOT mean your child needs to stay home from school. Encourage your child not to share hats or clothing, and not to play with each other’s hair. Keep longer hair tied back when possible.

Calling all party planners!
We are on the hunt for next year’s planning committee for Wedgwood’s grown-ups-only party of the year! The annual auction is Wedgwood’s biggest fundraiser of the school year, and it’s also an awesome community builder for families and the staff in attendance. We are looking for a few good Marmots to support or lead parts of the auction including Marketing, Event Planning and Procurement. Many of these roles can be done in the evenings and on your own time. We need an energetic team in place to pull off an event of this size! The funds raised are critical for all of the kids who attend Wedgwood Elementary. Please consider volunteering and email Roshni Hourselt at auctionwedgwood@gmail.com to learn more.
Congrats to Davina Inslee, Golden Acorn Award recipient!
Every year, the Golden Acorn Award is awarded from the Washington State PTA to a volunteer who goes above and beyond in their service to a school community. Davina Inslee is this year’s recipient at Wedgwood, and she is often described as an “encourager to all of us and dedicated beyond belief.” She started volunteering when her oldest – who will be a freshman in high school in the fall – entered kindergarten. Her youngest is a 5th grader and if you’re counting up the years on your fingers – that’s almost a decade of volunteering at Wedgwood Elementary.
There is no task above or beneath Davina. She has represented our parent community on interviewing committees as Wedgwood went through leadership changes, served as PTA President, has been involved in every single event at the school, and as the story goes, crawled on hands and knees to put down tape in the cafeteria so our sweet, incoming kindergarteners would know where to line up on their first day of school. She has been a mentor to hundreds of us, and is the reason many of us are involved in the PTA. Thank you Davina, for tirelessly working to better our school, and encouraging us all to see the benefit in volunteerism.
Our Golden Acorn celebration was also a chance to celebrate all volunteers at Wedgwood – we have more than 75 leadership roles and another 200+ in critical support roles. Thank you all for your time, expertise and generosity. And a heartfelt thank you to our outgoing fifth grade parents. Thank you for your contributions to our art docent program, after school programs, school auction, used book sale, school directory, serving on the PTA Board and the many, many daily volunteering roles that are so common at Wedgwood, it can seem to go unnoticed. Your PTA, school staff and leadership, and entire Wedgwood community thanks you.

Mighty Movers needs you!
Every Monday at lunch recess K-3 have an opportunity to earn foot charms by running around the track. The kiddos love this activity, but if we don’t have enough volunteers we need to cancel. Help us out and sign up here. There are only a few more Monday lunch recesses when we will do Mighty Movers. Don’t let our kiddos down!

Eckstein board needs you!
Parents of rising 5th graders heading to Eckstein: The Eckstein PTSA Board needs YOU!
We have many board and committee positions to be filled, and we want YOU to get involved! Open positions include:
Vice President/President Elect: Attend PTSA meetings once per month. Support the PTSA president. The VP will assume the Presidency in 2020-2021.
Eckstein Annual Campaign Co-Chair: Supports the annual fundraising drive for in-class support.
Fundraising Chair: Manage the SCRIP and BoxTops fundraisers for the PTSA.
Staff Appreciation Chair: Organize staff appreciation activities (typically in December and May).
Meetings are once a month on Monday nights. This is a great way to learn about Eckstein and do essential work to support our kids and their teachers. We'd like to have all positions filled by our June General Meeting, which will be held on June 10 in the Eckstein Library. Contact April Wright, Shelley Prosise, or Amanda Franklin for more information!
Free Titans skills camp on June 2, 2019
There is a free skills camp on Sunday, June 2, from 3-5 p.m.; check in is at 2:30 p.m., hosted at at Ingraham High School. Each participant gets a free Titans tee shirt. We do basics football skills and drills. It gives families exposure to our program and our brand of Football!

Soccer camp at Jane Addams Middle School July 8-12
A Nathan Hale Raider Boys and girls soccer camp for elementary and middle schoolers will be held July 8-12, 2019. Register now before spots fill up! Elementary school hours: 9am -12pm. Middle School hours: 1–4 pm. Location: Jane Addams Middle School. $100 per player. Price includes five days of camp, T-shirt, soccer ball and coaching by Nathan Hale Soccer Team & Coach(es).
